Shatsk : National Nature Park

Ukraine, Lviv, Volyn, Lutsk

The park was officially created by the Ministry of Ukrainian Soviet Republic in 1983, later the president of then independent Ukraine has awarded the place 49,000,000 м2.

The park was created with the goal to preserve, create and sustainable usage of unique natural environments of the international importance and value, develop the network on world wide level in preserving and maintenance of biological and spatial diversity.

It is comprised from:

Crymno Lake - Sand Lake - Pulemetske Lake - Svityaz’ Lake - Klymivs’ke Lake (zoological reserve) - Hydrologic reserves: Luki Swamp - Painted Swamp - Piddovge-Pidkrugle Swamp

The territory of the park belongs to Volyn region, zone of the mixed forests, and here lays the main Euroepan water reserves, which separates basins of Pripyat river and West Bugor river.

Contemporary facts:

  • 23 lakes (amongst which the biggest lake in Ukraine: Svityaz - 26,2kм2 & 58,4m deep)
  • 31 types of fish
  • 33 species of fauna are in the Red Book
  • 800 types of plants
  • 28 species of flora are in the Red Book

Shatsky region is considered to be one of the most eco-friendly recreational spots and is a pride of Ukrainian people.  There are plenty of spaces to camp: from tents to more traditional caravan allocations ending with room/hut rentals.  There are also small spa hotels and resorts, but at a much steeper prices.

Walking trails are around 5km and are a perfect day there-and-back fun.  There is also an annual international song festival “On the waves of Svityaz”.

However, the true reason I take everyone I love to that area is that it is incredible wild and romantic, without being dangerous.

The nature of the park leaves unforgettable impressions in any time of year:

- Winter :  on the shores of the lake cross-country skying crowds slowly move around the hard-core lovers of the ice-fishing

- Spring :  with the first song of the brook the kittens of the willow and snowdrops begin to open, the ice slowly melts away, swans return from the warm seas, herons start gathering on the edges of the swamps

- Summer : birds turn into a loud cocophony as everything begins to bloom around the lakes; and yes, it is the most engaging part of the year when shores turn into gold sandy beaches caressed by the slow and gentle strokes of the waves.  Those who love to sit down with a rod will have an incredibly rich choice and finding a space to fish.  In the woods, ladies in the meantime are gathering wild strawberries, blackberries, blue berries, cranberries, foxberries, great bilberries.

- Autumn : means ‘quite hunt’ - wild mushrooms gathering with a massive choice of: pocini (great big white), chanterelle, brown and orange-cup boletus, boletus lutens, russula in all shades and colours.
